A Valentine’s Day to Remember with the Nokia Lumia’s

Valentine’s Day is a special day for (some) couples. Either by coincidence, or as a clever joke, Nokia and Microsoft decided to introduce the new hottest couple to Australia on this same day. With the looks of Branglina and the presence of the Osbourne’s, this new couple was certain to turn heads. The bold and head strong Lumia 710 wowed the room with its affordability but it was the sleek, curvaceous Lumia 800 that the crowds flocked too. The Lumia’s had finally arrived in Australia. Nokia Lumia 800 Australia Announcement

Two weeks ago I shared the news of Nokia beginning to advertise its new Windows Phone handsets here in Australia. Well, after an uncomfortably long wait, Nokia Australia finally broke the news that the mid-range Lumia 800 will go on sale some time during March 2012. The phone will be available on all major telcos, namely Telstra, Optus and Vodafone, but nothing was said about availability on more minor players such as Virgin and Crazy Johns.

Nokia Ad Heralding Windows Phone Launch in Australia

Casually browsing the net, I noticed this advert on the Sydney Morning Herald site. While not much is said, it does redirect you to the official Nokia smartphone page and details that a Nokia Windows Phone launch is coming. Their website says nothing about the imminent launch so we must take this ad with a grain of salt. Can we even trust an ad? You can see images of the ad below.

Possible New Australian Windows Phones Being Demoed Soon?

Microsoft Australia’s official Twitter account just posted this juicy piece of information:

“Test the latest #WindowsPhones at The Big Picture Experience, Melb Wed 23 Nov, Syd Thu 1 Dec. Register Here: http://aka.ms/bigpicau

Following the link in the tweet above has a break down of the events and doings on the day. The final tab, “A world of devices”, contains this exerpt:

“Play and explore the latest PCs, Slates and phones from Samsung, HTC, Sony, HP, Toshiba, Asus, Acer and Microsoft for the busy professional, the extreme gamer or for the home.”

While the list of OEM’s make more than just phones, we can assume Samsung, HTC and possibly Acer will have phones on display. Why would Microsoft be demoing phones that will not be sold here? It is strange that none of Australia’s telcos have announced any new Windows Phones running Mango. Maybe this day will act as a launch pad for Australia’s offering of Mango phones for the media to try and test out? Microsoft has been doing similar around the world.

The events are due to take place at Melbourne on the 23rd November and Sydney on the 1st December. All we can do though, is sit back and wait.

A Nokia Tablet is Real

What many believe, including myself, is if Microsoft wants its Windows 8 platform to give the iPad a real run for its money is simply a committed, enthusiastic OEM who is capable of releasing a tablet with the build quality and design that the consumers of the world have come to expect from Apple’s offerings. Simply looking at the Android devices shows that lower prices =/= success. All Android tablets released since its original conception have done nothing more than try to emulate the iPad and release it at a lower price. The Acer Iconia A500, Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tabs, Toshiba AT100 are many examples of a simple ctrl+c, ctrl+v of Apple’s design. The only real exception for design would be Asus’s EeePad Slider and the only tablet to give any competition in sales is Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1. None of these devices are inspirational or unique. Looking elsewhere in the market you see a similar scene. The RIM Playbook and HP Touchpad both run a unique OS and were (eventually) competitively priced but both failed to succeed. It’s obvious, consumers want an iPad. Not a cheaper, more featured product. Consumers want quality and a unique experience. No one wants to be the person who settled for “that other tablet”.
